According to various media sources and online news sites, the new Istanbul airport will be one of the largest international airports in the world. It is located in the Arnavutkoy district of the city. In the future, the new airport aims to handle more than 200 million passengers annually. Despite being award-winning and ambitious, it is already hit with various controversies. Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan officially inaugurated the airport in October 2018, however, it will become fully functional in March.
A huge airport
The airport project is unprecedented in terms of planning and size. It is nearly double the size of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, which is currently the largest airport in the world. It’s worth noting that the completion of this project in just three and a half years was tremendously challenging for the authorities, especially in terms of design, systems, processes, and equipment required to run the airport.
Building a new international airport is inevitably a very expensive undertaking (around 12 billion dollars), and there have raised a number of concerns around the coincidence of the project with a general slump in the Turkish economy. Recently, the international community have also raised ethical concerns about labor practices in the completion of the project on time.
Currently, the new airport is receiving a small number of flights per day. Gradually, most of the Turkish Airlines are moving from Ataturk Airport to the New Airport and it will become fully open in March 2019. Around 80% of the flights at Ataturk Airport are handled by the national flag carrier. The Ataturk Airport will be shut down once the new airport becomes fully operational. Also, there will be no changes in the Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen Airport.
Number of Terminals
Currently, the new airport has two terminals but eventually, there will be will four terminals. The other two terminals are undergoing construction and will be completed in the year 2028.
